Chapter 2: East Blue
COMING SOON
Part 1: Koby
Part 1: Koby
Somewhere on an uncharted island, an unwillingly meek pink-haired boy pirate found a barrel of rum. Unable to pick it up, he rolled it to his captain's rum storage. As he was entering, three of his crew mates where there. One of them, knowing full well that their captain, Iron Mace Alvida, would be enraged if she found out if they drank it, suggested they'd do just that. But before they could open it, Luffy burst through the lid, shattering it, exclaiming how nice of a nap he had taken.
Understandably, everyone was confused as to why a 16 year old just popped out of a barrel. Nevertheless, they attacked him, but with ease Luffy defeated three of them, leaving the pink-haired boy unharmed. As it would happen, Alvida, a hulk of a woman who viewed herself as being gorgeous, had heard the commotion. She was quite ticked off, thinking that her crew mates were taking a nap on the job. They made haste to clear it up, supposing that the small straw hat wearing boy might be a bounty hunter looking for Captain "Iron Mace" Alvida's bounty.
Alvida, viewing herself as being extremely powerful (and indeed compared to most in the East Blue, she was up there), believed that the only bounty hunter bold enough to seek her out was Roronoa Zoro, a man who had became infamous as the strongest bounty hunter in the East Blue.
Meanwhile, Luffy was with the meek pink-haired boy having ran away together. The pink-haired boy, Koby, worried if Luffy was okay. He stated that he may have been a bit surprised, but was fine otherwise, finally introducing himself. Koby, Alvida's cabin boy, returned the nicety, stating his job and name. Luffy, who revealed his small ship was destroyed in a giant whirlpool asked if Koby had a dinghy (a small rowboat sized boat). Koby said he did have one, but it was poorly put together, as he had been trying his best to build it himself to escape from Alvida.
Koby had went fishing and climbed aboard Alvida's ship. He was kidnapped and forced to become her cabin boy in exchange for his life. Luffy bluntly stated that Koby was a gutless coward, and Koby, admitting it, asked why Luffy went out on the sea by himself. Naturally, Luffy said he was out to become the King of the Pirates, and consequently find the One Piece, the true Gold Roger long ago hid on an unknown island.
Despite Koby's lack of belief in him, Luffy stood his ground, saying he was not scared of dying.
"Maybe... it's possible! Do you think I can join the Navy?"
This shocked Luffy. Naturally, as a pirate, this would mean Koby would end up being his enemy.
"I want to join the Navy and fight the bad guys! It's been my dream since I was a little kid! Luffy, do you think I can do it!" Koby, despite how weak he was, was gaining confidence from Luffy, even if they were on opposite sides of the same coin. "Well, I'm gonna do it! What've I go tot lost?! I don't wanna be a miserable cabin boy my whole life! Better to risk my life trying to achieve my dream! I'll join the navy... and then... um, I'll capture Alvida!" Koby shouted.
"Who are you going to capture!?" Alvida swung her iron mace at Koby's makeshift dinghy, shattering it.
"Hey, who's that tough-looking looking pest?" Luffy said, shocking everyone else.
Koby grabbed Luffy by the collar, "Luffy! Take it back. Through-out all of the seas, Lady Alvida is... she's..." Sweat begun to pour down Koby's face. "Lady Alvida is the ugliest old hag of all!"
Alvida swung her iron mace at Koby. Luffy respected the sudden change in Koby's bravery and instead took the blow. But as the iron mace hit Luffy, it had little to no effect. With a single punch, Luffy knocked the large woman to ground, declaring the future Mariner Koby was to be given a dinghy. Complying to his demand, the two of them safely sailed off together.
But there was more Koby wanted to know.
"Luffy, if you're going after One Piece, that means you'll have to enter the Grand Line."
Luffy may not have been the smartest guys, but he knew what he was doing and getting himself into; he knew the Grand Line was known as the graveyard of pirates. He was going to take whatever it took to gather the best of the best so that, even if his crew was only to be that of ten people they were to each be as talented as a one man army.

Twelve years after Gol D Roger was executed, a then fairly well known pirate arrived to our Luffy's hometown on a small island, deciding he'd stay there for a bit. Luffy, having looked up to Shanks, was rather close to him. Greeting Shanks in a bar, he saw Shank's and his crew harassed by mountain bandits. Despite all the mountain bandits did to aggravate the pirate crew, they stayed calm. This frustrated Luffy. He knew they were stronger than the bandits, so heedlessly swinging his arms and missing every time, he berated Shanks, calling him an idiot.
Shanks explained that you can't always let anger get you, and sometimes you have to just laugh it off. In the long road of life. What someone who doesn't even know you berates you, it's best to not let their words get to you. Having calmed down, a hungry Luffy ate this mysterious purple fruit. Shanks only realized what had happened after he had finished it. His little friend had ate a Devil Fruit, a very rare and mysterious type of fruit that granted people powers, but that of which takes away the ability to swim.
Knowing Luffy wanted to be a pirate, Shanks gave Luffy, now a child made of stretchy and durable rubber, that he would likely never achieve his dream of becoming a pirate, much less the King of the Pirates. Luffy stood his ground, he didn't care if he could swim. He would gather a crew that could save him, or he would find ways around it - he would do anything and everything to become the King of the Pirate and achieve true freedom. He would promise, that despite his body, he would learn how to punch as hard and fast as a pistol.
Ultimately, despite what Shanks said, Luffy went to attack the mountain bandits. The leader grabbed the small child and kidnapped him. The word managed to reach Shank's ears, who ran to rescue his naive friend. Shanks found Luffy being held captive by the mountain bandit's leader on a rowboat. going out to sea to drop the young child into the sea where he would be unable to swim.
Luffy hit the water, and uselessly flailed. Shanks dived into the water, swimming as fast as he could to save him. It was then that a huge serpent - a sea king - came out from the waters, seeking to devour Luffy. Right at the nick of time, Shanks reached him, and held him in his arm, his other arm in defense of himself. With just a menacing look at the Sea King, he scared it off.
"Thanks, Luffy. I was told everything. Thanks for sticking up for us." Shanks grinned, grateful for his friend. Despite his gratitude, though, Luffy was crying hard. "Hey, don't cry. You're a man, right?"
"Shanks... you arm!" Protecting Luffy, he had sacrificed one of his own arms.
"It's nothing. It's just an arm. As long as you're alive."
His stump mended, he was going to head out again, leaving behind Luffy. As much as he loved Luffy, he felt he was too young to face against the unpredictable nature of the sea. On the day Shanks left...
"You're really leaving this time?"
"Yep. We've stayed here long enough. It's about time we move on. Are you upset?"
"Yeah.. but I won't force you to take me along anymore."
"Heh. I wouldn't take you even fi you begged me."
"I'll just have to become a pirate by myself."
Shanks laughed, 'You don't have what it takes to become a pirate!"
"Yes I do! One day, I'll find myself a crew that is as strong as yours, and then I'll find the world's biggest treasure and become the King of the Pirates!"
"Oh! So you want ot be bigger than us, huh?" Shanks smiled softly, putting his hand to his straw hat, "Well then," he took the hat off, setting it on Luffy's head, "This hat is my gift to you." Tears started to run down Luffy's cheeks. "This is my favorite hat, you know." His back was now turned to Luffy, but one more time, Shanks looked back to Luffy. "When you become a great pirate in the future, return that hat to me."
Walking away, one of Shanks crew members said to him, "That kid's gonna be big."
"I know, because he reminds me of my early years."
Ten years later, Luffy set out to sail on a row boat, and as he was leaving land and the waves got bigger, the same Sea King that took Shank's arm arose to greet Luffy, hoping to devour him.
Luffy grinned confidently, "I've been waiting for you, sea monster! This is your unlucky day," Luffy stood up on his rowboat, readying himself, "I'll show you what I've learned in the past 10 years!"
The Sea King lunged, "Gum-Gum..." He winded his fist back, then shot it forward. "Pistol!" Hitting the Sea King's face, it jumped out of the water with the force of his hit, and fell back into the water,
"I'll have to find some friends first. I hope I can find at least ten people, and then I'll make a flag."

Over twenty years ago, the most powerful pirate explored the oceans, uncovering mysteries and great treasures. He, Gol D Roger, or as many knew him as, Gold Roger, came to be known as the King of the Pirates. On the day of his death, on an execution stand that overlooked his hometown, he spoke the words that would begin an era known as the Great Pirate Era;
"You want my treasure? You can have it! I left everything I gathered together in one place! Now you just have to find it!"
